Tesla’s Powerwall: Battery for Your Home

In late April, Tesla announced the release of an entire suite of new energy products. Among the impressive list of innovative products you can find the “Powerwall”, which may in fact revolutionize energy consumption. This battery for your home may just be the next step on our path to a more sustainable home.

As you may know from our “Green Home Building Guide” series, we here at PahRoo are always looking for exciting new ways to create a more sustainable household. Tesla’s Powerwall represents just that! This rechargeable lithium-ion battery is designed to mount to your wall, connect to the local power grid, and provide power to your home. Amazing!

Homes with the ‘Powerwall’ installed will notice serious financial benefits. Typically, energy consumed during peak morning and evening hours is more expensive. These home batteries will power up overnight, to supply energy to your household during the day.

Available in two configurations, 7kWh and 10kWh, these devices go for $3k and $3.5k. Although these price points are significant, homeowners should consider the reduction in monthly electric bills. According to Tesla board member Kimbal Musk, this new battery will slash consumer electricity bills by 25%. Ultimately, it should take about 6 years for these devices to start paying for themselves.

With the 10kWh configuration, you also gain the ability to adapt to power outages! If an outage occurs, your 'Powerwall' will act as a backup generator. Jim Luby of The Luby Group said it best when he told us, "Power outages may be a thing of the past!"

These batteries truly shine when coupled with solar paneling. Not only will the financial benefits increase, perhaps more importantly, we will lower our dependency on fossil fuels. Although the implementation of these batteries will likely occur in the commercial space more rapidly than residential, there is no doubt you will start seeing these in homes throughout the next couple of years.

“Our goal here is to fundamentally change the way the world uses energy.” said Tesla CEO Elon Musk,  during their announcement in April. This ambitious new technology has the potential to achieve a large scale disruption within the energy industry, and take us one step closer to a future fueled by clean energy.
